I’ve got a project on my hands. More specifically, my dad’s ‘01 Audi A6 2.8. He parked it in the garage back at the end of 2010 for some reason and it has sat ever since. He has tasked me with getting it running this weekend. Where in God’s name should I start?

Does he know why it’s broken? Like any idea?

How old is the timing belt? And did it ever actually stop running, or was it just parked?

He’s not a car guy at all and I was off at college when something happened to it. He has no idea what is wrong with it. Long story short, he couldn’t afford to fix it back then but is able to pay for repairs now but doesn’t want to haha

It’s at least 5 years old, so it’s probably junk regardless. (The belt, jury still out on whole car)

Honestly, I’d say just sell it and buy something else.
These cars are fairly hard to diagnose and treat unless it’s either being done by an expert or you have a lot of mechanical knowledge.

The car, if I remember correctly, had the timing belt done at 120Kish miles. It’s got 150K now. It didn’t just stop running. Something was up with it after work one day, he drove home and parked it because he couldn’t afford to get whatever is broken fixed on it.

I’ve tried to get him to do that but he refuses to do so. It was the first really nice car he bought brand new and he was so proud of it. It’s somehow more sentimental to him and I can’t blame him. I told him that I’d try my best but couldn’t make any promises.

What happened to cause it? First off, I’d check if it even cranks over and if anything has leaked out.
They’re really great cars, but expensive and complicated when they go wrong. I’m still sad I had to get rid of mine...

No idea what caused him to park it. He doesn’t know, can’t describe it, he’s useless haha I’m going to throw a new battery in and go from there.

I’d say change the oil before you even touch the key to the ignition. new battery, spark plugs. coolant
check the oil for metal shavings
see if theres oil in the coolant.

You have no idea. I drove it literally one time when it was on the road. ONCE. Nobody else ever got to drive it.

Tow it to CarMax, and hope for the best from their appraiser.
At the very least, fresh gas, oil, plugs, and battery. That’s just the start.

Pull the cover and check it, but beware my 1.8t belt looked fine on outside but started shedding teeth until it started slipping completely.

What opposaurus said. New plugs and new fluids. All of them. At least engine and trans until you make sure it runs. Then brake, coolant, everything. You’ll most likely have to get new pads and rotors if there’s any decent amount of rust on them. You may need to put some new fuel in too if it runs but not well or not at all.
Like you said, new battery too!

drain the fuel first thing, and put fresh fuel too. todays fuel only has a shelf life of about two months tops. you dont want that varnish mussing with stuff. like allroad said, oil too. and charge the battery first.

1) check tire pressure and whether they’re flat-spotted; 2) oil change, run it for a few hundred, then another oil change; 3) check all the gaskets for rot; 4) everything allroads said; 5) there is such a thing as fuel conditioner - you might need that, or to have the tank dropped, drained, and refilled.

Just kidding ... change all the fluids and any filters (fuel, window wash, engine oil, transmission, differential, coolant, brake and power steering), replace the battery, check tire inflation (and replace if needed), start the car and let it come up to temperature. Replace the engine oil again. Drive 5 miles and then back home. Check for oil in the coolant and vice-versa. Drive 20 miles and then back home.
Place some cardboard under all possible leaking spots and let sit overnight. Inspect for leaks in the morning. Replace any leaking seals and fluids as needed. Inspect the brakes, plugs/coils, lights, switches and controls. Drive 100 miles. If it doesn’t blow up you’re good to go.

ShiroZ31 has the right idea. The upper timing covers are easily removed in minutes to inspect the belt. Try to find out what went wrong with it and we'll see where we get, I've been through a hundred of these things. I still need to get back to you on the tech school thing too.
